The fox squirrel is the largest of all tree squirrel species. They reach approximately 19-29” in length. Their color varies by their surrounding habitat and regions in which they are established. Fox squirrels tend to be gray on top with yellowish undersides in the northeastern part of the squirrel’s range. In the western range, they are a bright rust color; in the south, they are typically black with white patches on their face and tail.
Despite the differences in size and coloration, they can be mistaken for American red squirrels or Eastern grey squirrels in areas where they co-exist. It is most common to find fox squirrels in yards and on power lines. The food habits of these squirrels differ by location; they enjoy plant buds, bulbs, crops, mushrooms, insects, seeds of fruit trees, roots, and bird eggs.
The fox squirrel spends more time on the ground than other squirrels and is most active during the day. Their nests are dreys; they have two separate dreys the summer and winter. The summer dreys typically consist of sticks high up in branches— the winter dreys in hollow tree trunks. They can nest in the same winter drey for years!
Fox squirrels can be nuisances. They raid birdhouses to eat eggs and hatchlings.
