The Brown-banded cockroach is a small, domestic species of cockroach that exists exclusively indoors. This roach is not as widespread as its cousin, the German cockroach. They have distinct markings— two brown bands right behind their head. As a result, these roaches are easy to spot for pest control professionals.
Male brown-banded cockroaches have wings that reach beyond the tip of their pointed abdomens; females have short, underdeveloped wings that prohibit them from flying altogether. The brown-banded cockroach’s lifespan is about 206 days. They prefer warm, high areas and are mostly found in kitchen nooks such as near refrigerator motors, on the upper walls of cabinets, and inside pantries. Brown-banded cockroaches often lay their egg cases in or under furniture.
They can enter a home via infested furniture, electronics, and food items. To survive, these roaches require ample food and warmth, which is why kitchens are the ideal hiding spot.
The brown-banded cockroach will feed on anything from trash to building materials; there is no shortage of food for this species. Brown-branded cockroaches can spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six types of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of harmful human pathogens. They pick up germs on the spines of their legs as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage, then carrying them onto food or surfaces food is prepared. Recent studies have shown that cockroach allergens can worsen allergies and exacerbate asthma, especially in children.
Treatment
The best advice for control is to practice proper sanitation. To prevent a brown-banded cockroach infestation, it is imperative you vacuum often, maintain a clean kitchen, seal all entrances around utility pipes and ventilate crawl spaces to prevent moisture buildup. If there is evidence of a cockroach infestation, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect and treat the brown-banded cockroach problem. The first step to eradicating a roach problem is proper identification. Once identified, a licensed pest control professional will be able to rid your home of these pests properly.
