Asian Roach Removal

The Asian cockroach is a species of roach that prefer the outdoors to indoors. Native to Asia, but introduced into Florida at the beginning of the 1980s, these roaches have spread widely throughout the state, as well as into Georgia. They are capable of surviving in virtually all coastal states across both coasts. Measuring in at approximately 1.6 cm long, these roaches are tan to brown and have wings. They appear strikingly similar to the German cockroach, though their wings are slightly longer. The quickest way to tell the difference between the two species is that the Asian cockroach is a stable flyer and is attracts to light in a way that’s similar to moths, unlike the German cockroach.

They are primarily an outdoor roach species that looks very similar to the German roach. Their biggest difference is that they fly readily; they are also attracted to lights and light-colored surfaces. Outdoors they may breed in huge numbers and readily invade structures as well, although it generally does not reproduce within a structure. Outdoors they are very common in shaded areas of thick vegetation, such as wooded or dense grassy areas. There can be anywhere up to 100,000 individuals per acre!

Treatment & Control

You can find the Asian roach in primarily warm and moist regions. As a result, these roaches are not native to Northern Michigan are typically only brought via travelers from warmer states. Control efforts will have limited results since the roaches often make their homesteads in wooded or grassy areas; unfortunately, these are areas that cannot be chemically treated. They have the ability to fly 100 feet in a single flight, coming to structures and the lights on them, easily bypassing chemical barrier treatments. The reduction of harborage sites and the elimination of attractive lighting are encouraged.
